Of course, providing a work email is entirely optional and you may choose to use a personal email ID.

  3. Why should I pick a competency or a goal? Can I change them later?

  5. Why do you need a different profile for becoming a mentor and for being a mentee?

In real world, all of us have some strengths and some areas where we need to improve. So when you are trying to be a mentor in an area, you emphasize those skills and competencies and elucidate how you can others. Whereas if you are seeking mentorship, then you will focus on areas where you need help and request help. Given the purpose of each activity is different, iMantri allows for two different profiles.

  6. How should I choose a mentor?

iMantri suggests that you assess your competencies and/or identify your goals and then look for a mentor that matches those criteria. Once you short listed a few mentors, review their profile, rating, testimonials. Or if you know someone within iMantri network, ask them for a referral to a good mentor.

Yes, indeed. You can have as many mentors as you feel you need.

No, not at all. You may mentor as many mentees as you possibly can. However, please remember that if you don't keep up your promises, your rating may suffer.

  10. Can I be a mentor and a mentee at the same time?

Yes indeed. The whole paradigm of peer to peer mentoring is that each of us has some gifts that we would like to share and at the same time there are areas where we struggle and need help. So the essence of iMantri is all of us coming together to help each other.

  11. Does iMantri endorse or validate mentors?

No. iMantri does not endorse any mentor (or mentee) not does it do any reference checks on members' claims and/or credentials. Peer rankings, testimonials, your mentoring interactions are some ways you can gauge the mettle of a mentor/mentee. But it's buyer (or user) beware!

No you don't have to. Just find mentors who are offering their services for free. And avoid working with mentors who are charging a fee. It is a choice you make.

  15. Are mentors who are charging a fee better than the rest?

iMantri believes that fee has no bearing on the quality of mentoring. It entirely depends on the mentors' skills, mentees needs, the compatibility of personalities, and the quality of their interactions.

  16. How will iMantri make money?

We are a for profit corporation that believes in doing good while doing good! At the moment, we don't have a revenue stream but we will try to make money through a) subscription to premium features b) selective advertising c) keep a portion of the fee that mentors charge and c) corporate licenses. Let us know if you have other ideas or can introduce us to corporations.

  17. Why should I care about competencies and competency assessment?

Competencies are building blocks that allow us to acquire the knowledge, skill and ability to perform certain tasks. Focusing on your competencies is a good way to build capability and capacity for longer term success.

  18. How do I know what competencies do I need help with?

Take the competency profile questionnaire and assess your competencies and generate a mentoring need analysis. Or you may ask your manager or a peer to help you understand what areas do you need to improve upon.

  19. Can I focus on more than one competency?

Yes, you may. However, make sure that you are not overloading yourself. It is better to focus on one or two things and achieve excellence. However, you are free to choose as many competencies as you want.

  20. How come I don't see the competency that I want to focus on? (May I suggest a competency?)

The initial set of competencies is just that - an initial set. We are open to adding more competencies based on user input. Please take a look at the competencies currently offered and if none of them match your need send us an email at feedback@imantri.com

  21. What is the purpose of goals?

Many of us work on one or more goals at any given point in time and receiving/providing mentoring around specific goals helps in achieving the set goals.

  22. I don't see my goal? (May I suggest a goal?)

The initial set of goals is just that - an initial set. We are open to adding more goals based on user input. Please take a look at the goals currently offered and if none of them match your need send us an email at feedback@imantri.com

  23. Can I work on a goal and a competency as the same time?

Yes you may. Ideally the competencies you are working on should get you achieve your goals. However, what competencies and what goals you want to work on is entirely up to you.

  24. What is your privacy policy?

    Please review iMantri's privacy policy.

  25. Can I use a screen name as I don't want to reveal my name?

You are welcome to use a screen name as well as an "avatar" instead of your picture. iMantri does not mandate use of real names and real pictures. However, when you approach a mentor or a mentee they may want to deal with a real person and may ask you to reveal your real identity.

  26. Should I give my real phone number or personal information to anyone on iMantri network?

Be cautious and use discretion before you give out any personal information. iMantri does not validate members nor does it do any reference checks. iMantri's platform facilitates real time web based interactions and in the future we will add IP telephony. Until then discretion is better part of valor.

  27. How are you different than other expert sites or advice sites?

Advice is a one-time thing, whereas mentoring is a longer-term value. It is the difference between giving fish and teaching a person to fish. Mentoring helps a mentee in developing a core competency, helps in accomplishing a goal and resolving an issue with thoughtful guidance and prudent coaching. Of course sometimes a mentor provides advice to help a mentee get over a particular situation.

  28. How are you different than not for profit services like SCORE or Big Brothers/Big Sisters?

iMantri has great respect for SCORE, Big Brothers/Sisters and other such organizations doing a yeoman job in various sectors. iMantri actually is complementary and synergistic and yet different. iMantri is a peer-to-peer network of equals mentoring each other (while of course there may be some professionals); a platform to facilitate mentoring interactions; and a social network for members to congregate. In fact, members of SCORE can participate on iMantri and such organizations may use a white label version of iMantri for their own mentoring interactions.
